Focus and Direction

Typically, motivation is a lot like blowing up a balloon. You blow up the balloon and without tying the end, you let it go and it flies all over the room bouncing against everything.

While it is great to have a balloon all blown up to play with, to really enjoy it you have to tie off the end so you can really have some fun with it. You can use it like a ball, or rub it on your head and let the static electricity stick it to the wall. Or you can tie a string to it and anchor it to something and bat it around. Without tying off the end you have the frustration of just blowing it up over and over and over again until it finally blows out the window or pops. While that is fun to do for a few minutes, it be¬comes tiring pretty quickly.

  • You Must Become Uncomfortable

Big difference, huh? My approach will not make you feel good. And I know how important it is for you to feel good. But feeling good never got you to do anything. If you listen to a speaker who makes you feel good, I doubt you will ever do a thing. If you listen to a speaker who makes you feel uncomfortable, then you might do something.

  • Self-Image Is Not The Key

Motivational speakers will tell you the key is self-image. The key is not self-image. Self-image is based on the words “I am.” How I feel about myself based on who I am. Well, face it; you are not who you want to be. Whaaaa! Too bad. Why not just sit in the corner and whine about it? Maybe Oprah or Jerry or Montel will have you on their show so you can get the whole world to feel sorry for you. That way you can whine about it instead of taking responsibility for it. Surely that will help.

How you feel about who you are is just not that important. How you feel about what you “can do” is what is important. The key is self-can-age. I made that word up. My word is based on how you feel about yourself based on what you can do. And you can do just about anything you commit yourself to do based on the best use of your abilities.

  • This is what you need to understand: Motivation that makes you feel good about yourself will not change your life. Knowing you can do whatever you want to do will change your life. You have to move from feeling good about yourself to believing in your abilities. There is a major difference between the two concepts. Who cares if you feel good about yourself? Instead, believe in your abilities. That belief will propel you to amazing heights. You will believe you have the abilities to accomplish amazing things. And you do!

  • You Must Do The Right Things

What are the right things? I do not need to tell you. You know what they are. You know exactly what you need to do to change your life completely for the better. The problem is never that we do not know; it is always that we do not do what we already know. So I am not go¬ing to insult you by making you a cute little list that reads, “Just Do This Stuff” and you will be okay.

Am I totally against motivation and self-help? Not at all. I make my living in that industry. In fact, this is a self-help blog.

  • I believe we have forgotten our English lessons. Actually that is pretty obvious; just listen to the conversations going on around you. It sounds like most people never even had an English lesson, much less remember their lessons. Them people ain’t got no idea how to talk good irregardless of what they been learnt.

  • Combine Attitude With Work

Work: a dirty word. You are paid for effort—the effort to serve others well. Service is rewarded. Always. It is a Universal Law. Earl Nightin¬gale said, “Your rewards in life are in direct proportion to your ser¬vice.” A lofty idea that sounds so sweet to say.

  • Attitude is important; I will give you that. But it will not keep anything from happening to you. It will help you deal with what happens to you, but it will not keep anything from happening to you. So while it is important, it certainly is not everything. Attitude is only one thing.

What people sometimes think is if they get their attitude right then they will have no problems, they will have nothing bad happen to them, and they will not even have to work—simply because their attitude is so good.

Attitude alone will not change things. Effort changes things. Thoughts change things. Words change things. Again, remember this: It is what you think about, talk about, and do something about that comes about. That is what changes things: the combination of those three things. It is not what you have a positive attitude about!

  • Attitude and Motivation

    Attitude motivation

Let me begin with two things I am absolutely positive of: attitude is not everything and motivation does not work.

“What? How can you say that? You lie! You are a bad man! I buy books by motivational speakers all the time! I go to hear motivational speakers whenever I get a chance. I listen to motivational tapes and am the biggest and best customer of Nightingale-Conant and Career-Track. So what do you mean attitude isn’t everything and motivation doesn’t work?”
